And Up, They Sprung

Politics. Betrayal. Thinly veiled metaphor.

Faced with eternal damnation after a familiar cabal of technocrat tycoons usurp heaven’s throne, a once-righteous web warrior must atone for the sins of her past to make a final plea for salvation.

And Up, They Sprung is a 40-page surrealist dark comedy graphic memoir mini-comic that reflects on my work in computer programming and my upbringing in the epicenter of the early 2000’s tech world as it relates to the eternal war between heaven and hell. Shifting through several different motifs, the comic draws from John Milton’s seminal epic poem, Paradise Lost, and the many mainstream media works that reference it.

And Up, They Sprung is the recipient of the 2025 CAKE Chicago Cupcake Award.

(teaser)

At CAKE 2025, I released a ten page teaser of And Up, They Sprung. The teaser is a 10-page riso printed in Black and Red on thick, speckled cardstock with 70lb text weight paper. The teaser represents one of the styles and tones that will be present throughout the final work, but does not give away all of the surprises!
